A Guide to Sensory-Friendly & Autistic Travel in Northeast Ohio

Our autistic family spent years locating the best Cleveland destinations that balance sensory-friendly accommodations with family fun. As an autistic nurse-midwife and native Clevelander raising four neurodivergent children, I’ve created this guide to sensory-friendly & autistic travel in Northeast Ohio.

TLDR: Sensory Considerations

• Playhouse Square Theater: Full sensory modifications, including lower sound, house lights left on low, freedom to move or stim, and quiet volunteer-staffed rooms outside the auditorium if a child gets overwhelmed.
• Embassy Suites Beachwood Atrium: The soaring glass atrium creates a heavy acoustic echo (high auditory stimulation), but the glass elevators are an absolute visual delight for kids who love rhythmic motion.
• Staybridge Suites Stow: Has a quiet, apartment-style layout with less echo, though you may occasionally get cooking odors from food (like frying fish) in the halls.

Sensory-Friendly Day Trips & Dining in Northeast Ohio

This guide will continue to expand as we acknowledge that more attractions in NEO are becoming more sensory-friendly and neuroinclusive.

Nature and Outdoor Breaks

Head to Rocky River Reservation in the Metroparks to burn off energy without crowds. Walk the paved trails, look for salamanders in the shallow river bends, or find a quiet spot at the river to fish. 

Coe Lake (Berea) is great for time in the water, with options to rent a canoe or paddleboard. The park also has an accessible treehouse for kids. Finally, the library provides a Storybook Trail where kids can read a children’s book mounted on posts along the wooded trail as they walk. 

Local Shops, Food, and Quirky Stops

If you want to skip the big chain stores, the West Side has plenty of local spots. You can grab fresh food downtown at the West Side Market, in Westlake’s Crocker Park Farmers Market, or Frostville Farmers Market in North Olmsted.

For oddities and unique shops, the Buckland Museum of Witchcraft & Magick in Old Brooklyn is tiny and quiet, and it runs strictly on timed tickets, so it never feels packed. Over in Lakewood, Oktober’s is full of crystals and minerals for kids who love collecting rocks. For a low-key afternoon walk with ice cream, the nostalgic Grand Pacific Junction in Olmsted Falls has charming, historic shops along brick sidewalks.

Coffee, Libraries, and Indoor Spots

When you need an indoor break, Rise & Grind has couches and soft booths that make a great alternative to restaurant chairs. 

The Cuyahoga County Public Library system is also incredible. Branches like Fairview Park, Parma, and Olmsted Falls have well-maintained play areas and free structured storytimes.

Classic Cleveland Spots

Memphis Kiddie Park in Brooklyn is a kiddie theme park featuring low-speed rides for toddlers. Swings-N-Things in Olmsted Township offers mini-golf, go-karts, and arcades for older kids.

At the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, the open spaces, fresh air, playground, and carousel are excellent for sensory inclusion. If walking the full park feels unmanageable, try focusing on just the Australian Adventure or the elephant exhibit.

Downtown, the Cleveland Museum of Art is completely free, with wide, quiet galleries and hands-on art stations at Studio Play. Right nearby, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History has dinosaur fossils, interactive exhibits, and planetarium shows.

Playhouse Square: Sensory-Friendly Hub

Our neurodivergent family enjoys Broadway shows, but finding inclusive play options in northeast Ohio can be challenging. Playhouse Square is a performing arts center offering sensory-friendly programming for individuals on the autism spectrum or with other sensory, social, and cognitive sensitivities.

Sensory-Friendly Plays

These inclusive presentations cater to neurodivergent people, including individuals with autism, ADHD, or sensory issues. If your family benefits from decreasing sensory overwhelm, the sensory-friendly play is for you! The programming runs the full-length performance and provides:

• Lower sound levels, no strobe effects, and fewer startling special effects.
• House and stage lights remain at a low level throughout the show.
• Audience members can stand, move, talk, or make noise during the performance.
• Individuals can use electronic devices and support items in the audience.
• Playhouse Square offers quiet areas and activities staffed by trained volunteers.

Families and friends are welcome to attend these sensory-friendly events in a judgment-free atmosphere. The Playhouse Square age requirement is two and above. Every guest, including children, must purchase an entry ticket.

Broadway Series

Disney plays are known for incredible special effects, fantastic performers, and creative costumes and sets. The songs from the original film tie old favorites to an expanded musical score and imaginative play. The Disney Broadway series regularly stops in Cleveland at Playhouse Square and publishes a schedule of sensory-friendly plays.

Review of the Sensory- Friendly Performance

As an autistic nurse with four neurodivergent children, I’d like to review our experience at Playhouse Square. Over the years, our family has attended sensory-friendly matinees of The Lion King, Frozen, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Newsies.

Frozen

The Frozen play was incredible, and felt familiar. The musical numbers were reminiscent of the actual movie, while the adults loved the creative differences! Our littlest family members loved the play so much, which was a refreshing change. Typically, our youngest children require a break, or one of us to sit with them while they take one in the lobby.

Lion King

The lights were bright overhead, and my children will never forget the actors walking down the aisles as animals. The initial act is incredibly memorable and engaging. The Lion King is one of the best plays I have ever seen, and I will always bring my babies to any opportunity.

Our son prefers to attend sensory-friendly performances with his siblings instead of a birthday party each year. He feasts on expensive snacks and drinks and gets to choose a souvenir from the play. He will always request The Lion King, despite seeing it multiple times. I do recommend noise-canceling headphones if needed, but during the sensory performances, my children were able to stim and dance.

Squire’s Castle (North Chagrin Reservation)

The Cuyahoga River Gorge (Cuyahoga Falls)

The High Bridge Glens Park is a small scenic overlook and riverside walkway offering sweeping views of the Cuyahoga River gorge, sandstone cliffs, and local waterfalls. The modern bridge provides a safe vantage point above the river, and the pedestrian paths and boardwalks allow visitors a closer look. In 2009, the City of Cuyahoga Falls rededicated the treasure as a public neighborhood park.

Our children love to get outside to help them decompress and sensory-regulate. While the rushing water is soothing in the summer, the icicles are spectacular in the winter. Interestingly, until the 1890s, this space was a Victorian Amusement Park. Visitors called the gorge and rapids “The Niagara of Ohio.” Floods and industrial changes changed the area, and the original park closed.

Shinto Japanese Steakhouse (Strongsville)

If you’re looking for an interactive family meal on the West Side, Shinto Japanese Steakhouse in Strongsville offers a rare trifecta: engaging teppanyaki showmanship, a dedicated gluten-free protocol, and half-price select sushi specials. The onion volcanoes and flying egg tricks make it a huge hit with kids.

Sensory & Allergy Note: The main hibachi floor is loud, bright, and high-energy. If your neurodivergent family needs a lower-sensory atmosphere, ask to sit in the quieter bar/booth area or on the outdoor patio instead.

Northeast Ohio Sensory-Friendly Hotels

I don’t make the rules. Clevelanders know there’s an unwritten rule about the divide between the East and West sides. When planning a trip, grouping your activities by side of town is essential to avoid meltdowns in traffic.

Waterpark Staycation: Great Wolf Lodge Sandusky

If you want a solid weekend staycation without driving hours, Great Wolf Lodge in Sandusky is an easy trip from Cleveland. It’s in the Lake Erie Shores region and works well for sensory-sensitive kids because the layout is much smaller and less overwhelming than the massive parks down the road.

If your child struggles with noise, head into the waterpark right at opening or during the last two hours before closing when the crowds drop off. Embassy Suites: Beachwood, Ohio

Embassy Suites Beachwood: Amenities

The resort features an indoor pool, fitness area, and hot tub that is periodically closed for repairs. For dining, there is a sit-down restaurant with carryout and room service.

The Beachwood Embassy Suites has a business center with desktop computers in the lobby. However, it is noisy and public. It was much quieter to work at the business desk in your personal suite.

Most local hotels do not have lifeguards, but it bears repeating that there were NO lifeguards.  Autistic children are 160 times more likely to die of drowning than their peers. We must prevent elopement to stop them from getting to the pool.

Important: Safety & Elopement

When booking a room and requesting your floor, be aware that your loved one is at risk for eloping or hurting themselves on a high balcony. The sliding doors with standard locks lead to private balconies, and may not be enough for a determined explorer.

Bring your own door alarm and ask the front desk if they have a slider lock. If you’re worried about heights, request a ground-floor unit at check-in to avoid a high balcony. To keep everyone safe inside, I recommend a two-layer approach: a physical barrier they can’t reach and an audible alarm that goes off if they try.

Our Recommended Travel Safety Gear:

• The Addalock Portable Door Lock: This physically prevents the door from opening even if the deadbolt is turned from the inside. It takes seconds to install and fits in your pocket.
• Door Guardian (Stick-On Version): For inward-swinging doors, it uses high-strength 3M adhesive, so you don’t have to drill into the door’s surface. It sits at the very top of the frame, completely out of reach.
• GE Personal Security Window/Door Alarms: These 120dB magnetic sensors trigger a loud siren the moment the door or sliding patio glass is opened, even an inch.
• Securityman 2-in-1 Security Bar: You lay it in the track of the sliding patio door, and the door is secure. It cannot slide open from either side until the bar is removed.

The Embassy Suites in Beachwood has a tiny kitchen where we can store our family’s gluten-free food. The rooms are fairly similar at every Embassy, so our son knows what to expect when we arrive. The living area provides blackout drapes for children with difficulty sleeping.

The coffee bar has a Keurig with coffee, cream, and sugar.  As Hilton members, we got two free bottles of water. The kitchenette also has a small bar sink. This area helped us to provide our son with his unique food items.

The sofa is for sleeping, perfect for small children.  The linen was already on the sofa, but there were blankets and pillows in the closet.

This is a spacious, gorgeous shower with a glass door that lets you fit multiple small kids in at once. Depending on your children’s ages, the lack of a bathtub may be a major drawback. The hotel provides hygiene products (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion,  soaps, and tissues). There were no bath towels in our room, so we had to call to request them. 

Each spacious two-room suite features a king or two double beds. The kitchen was immaculate, and the room felt fresh and contemporary, with a large desk for business travelers (or remote queens like me).

A huge benefit was a second sink in the bedroom, so I didn’t have to wake small children to wash my face or brush my teeth.

Dining at Beachwood Embassy Suites

Do not wait until the meltdown hunger point to order; make a plan now.

I am an absolute breakfast junkie, and the free breakfast spread is my favorite part of the hotel breakfast. It includes chafing dishes of hot eggs, bacon, sausage, and buffet-style breakfast potatoes. A chef makes pancakes, waffles, French toast, and omelets to order at the grill.  If you’re looking for a lighter option, the continental breakfast features toast, bagels, yogurt, and fruit. Management and the chefs were very responsive during breakfast.

Every evening, a free manager’s reception is held from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, featuring unlimited snacks, soft drinks, and cocktails. The area near the free bar for the manager is barebones and lacks luster. However, the staff is much warmer than the space. While I was juggling children and equipment, the hostess offered to get my children Shirley Temples and nachos.

Room service is available in your room for a significant fee. You can order carryout from the hotel restaurant, Park East Bar & Grill, by calling from our room and sending someone downstairs to pick it up.

Park East Bar & Grill prepared our hot dogs and burgers without buns to keep them gluten-free. The server didn’t seem well-versed in allergens, and I was very concerned about possible cross-contamination. If you are gluten-free like me, you will find that the snack and breakfast buffets are full of gluten and other allergens. The risk of cross-contamination is high.

Once we arrived at the restaurant for pickup, the bartender ignored us for quite a while, and our food was cold by the time we got it. With all of the options nearby and through food delivery apps, I would skip the restaurant.

Sensory Considerations and Autistic Accommodations

The hospitality staff was patient, professional, and kind with children.

The echo of the open atrium can be noisy and overwhelming to autistic individuals. The glass elevators offer proprioception input, with a gorgeous view on each trip to and from our room. The resort features contemporary decor that is starting to appear dated, and the rooms still smelled a bit musty. 

As a mother, I had safety concerns that left me nervous. The large, relatively warm hotel pool has a deep end slightly more than five feet deep, which terrifies me as a mother. The pool was overcrowded, and our children quickly got in over their heads.

The Staybridge Suites has a homey vibe and is a valuable option for larger families looking to stay in one suite. It feels less like an extended-stay motel and more like an apartment. (And sometimes the smell of frying fish confirms that!)

The design is pretty standard, with brown tones and fresh decor in good condition. The lobby feels welcoming, and the staff is friendly. The Staybridge Suites in Stow are ideal for families with autism or sensory needs, business travelers, and families seeking a full kitchen.

The Stow hotel is relatively close to Akron City Hospital, the University of Akron, family-friendly vineyards, Blossom Music Center, and Cuyahoga Valley National Park. This spacious family suite in the suburbs of Akron is pet-friendly, so you can bring your furry friend for an additional fee.

There are three types of suites: studios, one-bedrooms, and two-bedrooms, available with two beds or one king bed.

One Bedroom Suite (with King bed)

When you walk into the suite, the kitchen is immediately visible. The kitchen comes with a full-size refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot, and dishwasher. There are Pyrex containers, large utensils, silverware, plates, bowls, and cups.

Across from the kitchen is a large desk with room to spread out your work and a laptop. The Wi-Fi connection is decent.

The living area features a sofa that turns into a double bed and provides extra seating. Unfortunately, the rooms lack a view; the windows look out over the parking lot.

The sleeping quarters, separated from the living room by double doors, feature a spacious king bed. However, there is no privacy on the sofa, and the bathroom is located directly off the bedroom. If you’d prefer not to walk through the bedroom to use the restroom, I would suggest getting a two-bedroom suite.

The bathroom features a bathtub with a showerhead and plenty of towels. There is a one-person sink outside the bathroom, which is excellent for getting ready in the morning. Having a locked bathroom for showers requires an extra sink to get six people ready.

Staybridge Suites Stow Amenities

The Staybridge Suites Stow has a fitness room, pool, and a small store with extremely costly beverages and snacks. The fitness center has enough cardio machines and weights to squeeze in a workout. Our family usually ends the day with swimming.

The complimentary evening social is typically offered Monday–Wednesday. The evening offerings often feel substantial enough to double as dinner, especially if you have a few snacks waiting back in your full in-room kitchen. Past menus have included hearty, comforting options like:

• Baked potatoes with toppings
• Chili
• Pasta dishes
• Salad bars

Soda, beer, and wine are available, and food selections vary by evening and by week. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, making it easy to unwind without heading back out for the night.

There is no on-property restaurant or room service here. Those with food sensitivities or dietary needs have a variety of restaurant options nearby in Stow. We avoid sit-down restaurants and stock our fridge with familiar foods and prepare them in the kitchen.

Sensory Considerations for Staybridge Stow

There is a one-person sink outside the bathroom, which is excellent for families getting ready in the morning. The pool is our favorite sensory regulation and decompression tool. They are pet-friendly, meaning you can bring a beloved cat or dog for an additional cost.

This complimentary evening reception is noisy, but filling. There are no balconies, which is nice from an elopement perspective. The windows lack a view and look out over the parking lot.

Private spaces here are not as straightforward as they seem. There is no privacy for those sleeping on the sofa, and the bathroom is located directly off the bedroom. Thus, those sleeping in the private bedroom need to have their door open for middle-of-the-night potty trips.
