Hilton Head Island: The Ultimate Autism and Family Travel Guide

Like many families, we’ve found that travel isn’t just about the destination—it’s about how you approach the journey. Our road trips to Hilton Head Island taught us a lot about how to slow down, find quiet spaces, and enjoy the island in new ways.

Now, those intentional habits have stuck: from dining outside and exploring by bike to setting realistic travel expectations with our kids (especially with one on the autism spectrum), we’ve found that deliberate travel makes for better vacations.

Here’s what works for us in Hilton Head, focusing on finding peace and joy for the whole family.

The Best Hilton Head Island Activities

We recommend everything in this list because we swear by it for our trips. However, we may earn a small amount if you click on some of these links.

  • Dine Al Fresco. One of our favorite ways to enjoy Hilton Head is with a picnic lunch in a quiet, scenic spot. While dining out with a big family (especially one with sensory sensitivities) can be overwhelming, picnicking lets us relax, avoid crowds, and soak in the island’s beauty. When we go out, we always choose the smaller, quieter spots in the off times with outdoor seating. You can also get carryout and enjoy it on your balcony!
  • Stroll the Marina. Take a stroll along the long, winding dock on the marina. There are benches along the way to stop and relax. You can also leisurely walk along the oceanside, an excellent place to grab a seat early in the morning around sunrise. The beach sand is like sugar.
  • Book a Marsh View Room. Those staying in the Lowcountry have a chance of seeing dolphins gracefully swimming and jumping through the wake of a boat. You’ll see groups of kayakers traversing through the grass across the island.
  • Bike Ride Across the Island. We love starting our day with a family bike ride. It’s one of the best ways to explore Hilton Head, and the island is incredibly bike-friendly, making it a fun, low-stress way to get around.
  • Hit the Beach. The peaceful, long, never-ending shoreline allows families to easily spread out and enjoy the beauty and sunshine without feeling crowded.
  • Go Swimming in the Atlantic Ocean. The water is a bit cooler this far North and feels refreshing on your hot skin—a truly peaceful paradise.
  • Ride a Pirate Ship. Because you can!

And for all our adventures, we love using the naturalist’s guide to the beaches and salt marshes of Hilton Head Island.

Finding Quiet, Peaceful Outings

Many of the peaceful habits we formed still shape the way we travel today. There’s nothing better than hopping on a bike and cruising the scenic path to the beach.

  • Bike the Lowcountry Trails: If you’re staying on the marsh side of the island, the ride may be a bit longer and hillier, but it’s also stunning—passing under live oaks and across boardwalks with incredible views.
  • Biking to the Dune House: One of our favorite quiet adventures is biking to the Dune House. You can ride right up and park your bikes, then relax outside with a cold drink or a freshly grilled lunch. It’s casual, coastal, and often features live local bands.
  • Find Your Quiet Stretch of Sand: After lunch, go for a long walk on the beach. If your spot feels too busy or overstimulating, just keep riding. The island has many beach entrances, and with a little exploring, you’re bound to find a quiet stretch of sand to call your own.

A suite, especially one with a scenic marsh view, allows for the peace and space that makes intentional travel possible.

Setting Kids’ Travel Expectations

We’ve learned that setting expectations is ALWAYS helpful when traveling with our children. Having a long discussion about the trip’s structure and pace beforehand helps manage sensory input and transitions, ensuring a smoother, more enjoyable vacation for everyone.

What to Pack for Hilton Head

Our packing list focuses on spending time outside and supporting sensory needs:

  • Snacks and Drinks: Bring all the snacks and drinks you need. We like to save time and money by ordering groceries to our suite through Amazon or using Walmart Grocery Pickup.
  • Entertainment Supplies: Our family loves playing games like Disney Scrabble Junior together. The bigger kids can enjoy reading to the little ones. Checking out library books before you leave is a cheap way to keep kids entertained on long car rides or rainy days.
  • Sensory Support: For kids who are sensory sensitive, bring noise-canceling headphones, sunglasses, or favorite comfort items. Having familiar things on hand can make new places less overwhelming.
  • Sun Protection: Pack plenty of sunscreen to protect their skin after all that time outside!
  • Sanitizing Essentials: Keep plenty of hand sanitizer and wipes on hand for quick cleanups—kids touch everything!
